JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Washington — Barracks today are very different from two soldiers living in a room with bunk beds and lockers, sharing a bathroom on each floor.

Barracks soldiers of the 3rd Squadron, 38th Cavalry move into the new barracks complex at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on November 28. 3.-38. is one of many units that advance soldiers to improve the quality of life today.

Some of the improvements in the new barracks include each room having its own furnace, washer, dryer, and full bathroom. Two soldiers share a kitchen and bathroom, but have their own bedroom and dressing room.

"Having the bathroom right here and not having to walk all the way down the hall in the middle of the night is my favorite part of the new room," says Spc. Kyle Wilhelmi, B Company Gunner, 3-38.

Old Barracks 3-38 Shared bathrooms, showers, kitchen and common areas. Soldiers now have all these amenities in their rooms. This makes their life akin to living in an apartment. The change is intended to improve the morale and quality of life of U.S. soldiers.

"This levels the playing field for the quality of life of married Soldiers versus single Soldiers," Sgt. Ross Downey, squad leader, B Co, 3-38. "I see this as a fulfillment of the promise to improve the quality of life of freedom soldiers."

Boot Battalion 3.-38. is one of six new buildings in the complex. Over the past few years, new barracks have been constructed at several different locations at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. In addition to modern living conditions, the new building is also very environmentally friendly. They are designed to save energy and are made from environmentally friendly materials.

"It's good that soldiers are living more like adults so they're better prepared to go," Downey said. "The only thing they're missing right now is paying the bills."
